While we love watching the leaves change color in the autumn, watching them accumulate in the yard isn’t as pleasant. Raking and bagging leaves are tedious and time-consuming chores. As the leaves fall in the yard, it’s tempting to ignore them. After all, why can’t the leaves just stay on the lawn where they fall? Do we really need to remove them from the yard? While a little leaf clutter isn’t an issue, thick blankets of leaves should be removed. Picking up leaves in the fall helps lawns thrive in the spring.
Thick layers of heavy, wet leaves block sunlight and airflow. Leaves smother the grass underneath and stunt its growth. Plus, decaying leaves provide a place for snow mold diseases to develop. Critters also pose a threat. Voles, mice, and other pests like to hide under the leaves, digging up the turf or tunneling through the soil, damaging the lawn. That’s why leaf pick-up in the fall reduces turf-damage repairs in the spring.
Let’s face it. Leaf blowing and raking takes time and effort. So does a mower and bagger combination. Leaves can fill lawnmower bags quickly, requiring constant dumping. Mulching the leaves with a mulching mower works well in yards with just a few leaves, but mulching mowers aren’t equipped for leaves piled knee-high. That’s where professional leaf-collection equipment and a vacuum truck make all the difference.
